Backstory: How Roxanne’s voice-over career began
Roxanne’s voice-over career began when she was working the CKLM traffic desk in her hometown of Laval, Québec, over 25 years ago. In fact, she started recording commercials less than 48 hours after being on the job! As a fresh CFTR (College de formation en télévision et radio) graduate, she was eager to get her feet wet. She leaped into the fray and showed off her skills to the station director. At the time, she was one of the rare female announcers recording commercials at the station. She recorded many hundreds of radio spots over the next five years! These experiences launched her career. To this day, Roxanne recalls the day she was bitten by the voice-over bug.
“I went to a first audition for a perfume commercial, auditioning opposite one of Québec’s great actresses, saying to myself: ‘This will serve as a great experience, but I have no chance at all of getting it.’ Right after the audition, I left for a trip to Germany. As soon as I landed, I learned that, against all expectations, I’d gotten the role! Within thirty minutes, I was on a plane heading back to Montreal! I arrived at the studio jetlagged, still dressed in my travel clothes, not having showered or slept in 24 hours. I didn’t exactly exude the prototypical ‘perfume commercial’ look. This was an important turning point in my career, as it led to my becoming the voice of Maybelline New York. In hindsight, the story seems unbelievable! But I was a real go-getter and ready for anything!”
